Syracuse Symphony Orchestra

SYRACUSE, NY – This season marks the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra’s (SSO) 50^th anniversary. To celebrate, the SSO is looking back at the past 50 years by inviting back former music directors and conductors, performing repertoire of historical significance to the orchestra and featuring exciting guest artists who represent both the past and future of classical music.

In order to best serve the community in a time of economic tribulation, SSO has lowered prices for its 2010-2011 season. Now more tickets are more accessible to more people.

Season ticket holders may now purchase their tickets. Single ticket buyers will be able to purchase tickets in early September.

All regional single ticket prices will be a flat rate of $20. Student rush tickets, as always, are $5 the day of the concert with valid student identification.

Highlights – Post-Standard Classics Series

Past conductors, composers, guest artists and repertoire will be performed next season. Here are some major highlights of the season.

o       New Work (Henry Fogel Commission Consortium)

o       Henry Fogel is a former radio broadcaster in Syracuse who contributed to the success of the SSO in its formative years but also became a game-changer for orchestras across the country

Guest Artists:

·        Olga Kern, piano – October 1-2, 2010: Solid Gold

·        Yeol Eum Son, piano – October 8-9, 2010: Mozart and Merriment

o       Both Kern and Son are Van Cliburn Competition medalists. Kern has had previous successful performances with the SSO

·        Augustin Hadelich, violin – October 29-30, 2010: The Three-Cornered Hat

o       Performed with the SSO in his early career, now becoming a popular violin soloist around the world

·        Eliot Fisk, guitar – March 25-26, 2011: Fisk and Falletta

o       Jamesville-DeWitt high school graduate, has been popular with SSO audiences

·        Syracuse University Oratorio Society – November 5-6, 2010: Brahms’s Chroal Masterpiece

o       SUOS has long-time partnership with the SSO and performs nearly every season

·        Rachmaninoff, Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor – October 1-2, 2010: Solid Gold

o       Olga Kern’s competition winning piece

o       First concert of the new season

·        Bartok, Miraculous Mandarin Suite – February 4-5, 2011: Beyond the Score Miraculous Mandarin Suite

o       Looking to the future with a different, more engaging concert-going experience

o       A multi-media event

·        Beethoven, Symphony No. 6 in F Major – March 4-5, 2011: Beethoven’s Pastorale

o       A traditional favorite of SSO audiences

·        Berlioz, Symphonie fantastique – May 20-21, 2011: Fantastic Symphony

o       Orchestral feature that showcases the unity and brilliance of the orchestra

o       Also on this program is Wagner’s Prelude to Die Meistersinger, which was performed on the very first concert in 1961

o       Featuring: Ted Keegan, Watertown native, played the role of the Phantom a few years ago when Phantom of the Opera came to the Civic Center.

Additionally, after thirty years of service as Concertmaster, Andrew Zaplatynsky  will be stepping down from his position at the end of the 2010-2011 season. Zaplatynsky will remain a member of the first violin section following the 2010-2011 season with the honorary title of Concertmaster Emeritus.

During its 39-week season, the 80-member Syracuse Symphony Orchestra performs for more than 237,000 audience members through 213 full-orchestra and ensemble concerts in 17 counties throughout New York State. Founded in 1961, the Syracuse Symphony, led by a conducting staff of international caliber, has performed five concerts at Carnegie Hall, most recently on April 5, 2003, and was presented with the NYS Governor's Arts Award in 1999.
