Many children have fewer and fewer opportunities to enjoy live music in their schools. The Syracuse Symphony Orchestra's Adopt-a-School music education program introduces students—from a school "adopted" by a sponsor in the community—to the world of classical music. This program provides Central New York students, who might otherwise be unable to experience the SSO, with outstanding live musical performances by our Orchestra.

There are two options within the Adopt-a-School Program which tailor aspects of the educational offerings to the needs of the school and its students.

For more information about the Adopt-a-School Program and the sponsorship opportunities it presents to local corporations and businesses, call the SSO Development Department at (315) 424-8222.

Full Program

The program consists of four phases:

Phase I

Two chamber ensemble concerts are performed at the school. This part of the program introduces students to two different sections of the Orchestra. Ensembles may include a string quartet, brass quintet, woodwind quintet, or a percussion ensemble. To prepare and generate enthusiasm among the students, study guides will be provided to teachers prior to each performance.

Phase II

One workshop for music students is held at the school and hosted by SSO Resident Conductor Grant Cooper. This phase of the program allows children to inquire about the music that an orchestra performs, the role of the conductor, and other areas of interest. Mr. Cooper will also give an introduction to and inspire interest in the upcoming Young Persons Concert.

Phase III

One hundred tickets are distributed by the school for a Young Persons Concert. This live, full-orchestra concert will be the culmination of many students' yearlong exposure to the Orchestra, made more meaningful as the participating students will recognize the conductor as well as the ensemble musicians who performed at their school. The adopted school is expected to provide the transportation for the students to the Mulroy Civic Center at Oncenter.

Phase IV

Twenty tickets are provided for distribution by the school to selected students and their families for a Family Series concert, and thirty tickets are provided for distribution by the school to selected students and their families for a Classics Series concert. These tickets may be given to students who have demonstrated a particular interest in music, or they may be awarded as incentives—for instance, to students who show particularly strong or improving study habits. Participation in the arts by the entire family is encouraged through this phase of the program.
